My cat knows what he looks like to the point that it’s mundane for him to look in the mirror, but you can still find cute videos of pets reacting to their reflection all over the internet. Most of the time we feel the same about ours, but still there always feels like a distance between you and the “me” in the mirror. A portrait is an opportunity for you to see and present yourself the way you were observed, a tactile and emotional process that mirrors are incapable of.
